10:55 Still growing, Ohtani tops power rankings, surpasses Betts for third straight time
Shohei Ohtani (30) of the Los Angeles Dodgers has surpassed teammate Mookie Betts (32) as the No. 1 hitter in the MLB Power Rankings.

MLB.com, the official site of Major League Baseball, released its annual power rankings for Major League Baseball hitters on Nov. 16 (ET). Ohtani topped the Power Rankings for the first time this season, surpassing Betts, who had three consecutive No. 1 rankings.

Ohtani is the most dominant player in the majors with a career batting average of .288 (2,656-for-744), 183 home runs, 467 RBI, 462 runs scored, 95 doubles, and a .934 OPS, and a 38-19 record with a 3.01 ERA in 86 games (481⅔ innings) as a pitcher. He was the unanimous American League MVP in both 2021 and 2023, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball history to win at least two unanimous MVP awards.

After becoming a free agent at the end of last season, Ohtani surprised everyone by signing a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers despite undergoing elbow surgery last September that prevented him from pitching this season. It's the largest contract in professional sports history. This season, after a bit of a slow start, Ohtani has come back to life, batting .364 (63-for-173) with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs, 34 runs scored, nine doubles, and a 1.107 OPS in 43 games.

MLB.com writes, “Ohtani could have been excused for a dip in production this year due to elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all season and off-field issues (including the illegal gambling case of his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara), but he's found ways to get better every day. 바카라사이트 In the four power rankings this year, Ohtani has been ranked seventh, fourth, second, and now first. With the best OPS in the majors and an unbelievable barrel batted ball rate (16.1 percent), he should be able to stay at the top of the list,” said Jerry Baker, who highlighted Ohtani's performance this season.

Betts is also having a hot season this year. After switching positions from the outfield to shortstop this season, Betts is hitting even better, batting .348 (62-for-178) with seven home runs, 28 RBIs, 37 runs scored, eight doubles, and a 1.007 OPS in 45 games. As MLB.com notes, “Betts is just 2-for-8 with a .748 OPS in May, but don't let that fool you: He leads the majors in on-base percentage (.441) and is one of three players in the majors with an OPS over 1.000, along with Ohtani and Marcell Osuna (Atlanta). “To say he won't win his second career MVP (and first with the Dodgers) is just too much to ask,” said Betts of his performance this season.

Two of the Dodgers' MVP trio (Ohtani, Betts, and Freddie Freeman) split the 1-2 spot in the hitters' power rankings, with Juan Soto (Yankees) in third, Marcell Osuna (Atlanta) in fourth, and Kyle Tucker (Houston) in fifth, 6 William Contreras (St. Louis), 7 Aaron Judge (Yankees), 8 Ryan Jeffers (Minnesota), 9 Salvador Perez (Kansas City), and 10 Alec Bomb (Philadelphia) round out the top 10.
